THAT TIME I FOUND A BUNNY...AT WORK.

bunny2
Finding a bunny at work is totally normal, right?

And even more normal to find one in your fenced-in play yard, right? Last week, while I was putting weekly newsletters in cubbies, I saw something moving outside the window from the corner of my eye. I moved my head and saw that little guy hopping around our play yard near the garden boxes.

I grabbed another teacher for reinforcement (fortunately no kids were at school yet!) and we both headed outside to see if we could catch the little guy who was hopping around munching on twigs and grass. Fortunately, this little bunny is slower than the kids I've had to chase but he had the advantage of being able to hop underneath some of the fence's high parts. So we went through gates, into rose bushes trying to get him out.

But once we caught him, all he wanted were snuggles. I've met other rabbits who hate being held, but this guy really just wanted to be snuggled.

We checked online for any lost rabbit reports, but no luck. We shared some apples and carrot sticks and kept him in a cardboard box for the remainder of the day. And whenever someone stopped by, he was picked up and snuggled some more.

Even though everyone at work wanted him (or suggested we keep him as a class pet!), I somehow ended up with him and had my mom and sister bring in an old cage so we could take him home for the night--which turned into the rest of the week.

So now (for the time being) we've got a bunny! We reported him to our local humane society, but as of now, there have been no reports of a lost black rabbit. And yes, we're falling more and more in love. He's gaining some weight, looking happier, and loves sweet dried fruits like raisins and banana chips.

So if you have any names or rabbit tips/tricks, please let me know! It's honestly way harder for us to choose than we thought, haha.

p.s. Apparently my family is really great at finding animals--did you know our first pup showed up on our doorstep in the middle of the night?

p.p.s. Wednesday is The Circle! We're sharing our responses for Never Have I Ever and I hope to see your posts, then!

  3. that is such a precious bunny! So cute and fluffy! And those ears! They're so cute! :) Hope you either find his family or learn to love him and maybe even keep him?! That's also how we got our first family cat.. we found him as a malnourished kitten on the street and never had the heart to bring him to the adoption center.. haha he's been with us for over 8 years now! :)

  6. Umm. Best work day ever much??? My sister has a bunny named Mr. Bun Buns. The only bunny tip I know from her is that if you have other pets that frequent the outdoors, the bunny will need flea control too!

  8. You've basically described my entire's life wish: to come across a sweet little bunny and take it home with me. Have you had rabbits before?

You should name him something absolutely charming and classic and then give him a column on your blog where you post a million photos of his adorable little self.

Question: how did you know he's domestic/tame? Do they look different from wild rabbits? Was it because he was a bit slow and so willing to be held and snuggled?

  9. I love that cute little bunny!!!! I had a friend once who had a bunny for a pet. So cute! Glad you found a new little friend. I'd name him Thumper. =) or SNuggles.

  11. He is so cute! I had a bunny once. She was very cuddly and sweet. Name choosing is always hard for me. Have you picked one yet?

  12. Ooh, that's a good one! :) And I love the name Daisy for a pup! I think we knew we both had Daisy dogs? I don't know, though! We have way too much in common, haha.

  13. Ooh, another great suggestion! I'll be adding all of these to the mix! :)

  14. Haha, I'm not sure that would be a great thing to happen upon! :) Were the kids out on the playground when it happened?

  15. We still haven't found an owner to claim him yet, but we're still falling more and more in love with him! And that is so sweet that you found and rescued your cat--especially when it was just a little kitten at the time! Pets are the best, right?

  16. Pretty and pretty cute, too! :)

  17. Same! I don't have the time to take care of one myself, but it's nice to live with others (aka my family!) who can help take care of him. He's solely owned by my older sister, but we all consider it a family pet now! :) I will definitely give more updates--it would be hard not to with a cute face like that, haha.

And I looove double letters, too! There's something really cool about those words. I'll add the names to the suggestion pool, too! Thanks for the ideas! You can always keep them coming!

  18. You should come visit it, haha. :) It's cute and cuddly and sooooo calm. It's definitely the opposite of the bunnies I met as a kid!

  19. It really is! It's actually kind of weird because the rabbits I met as a kid were not nearly as people-friendly and willing to be held and picked up! :)

  20. Exactly! It was actually really weird because if I hadn't looked out the window at that moment, I likely wouldn't have seen him (especially since he's so dark in color!). Let's just say not much could top that! :)

And thanks for the tip about the fleas! That'll really come in handy when spring comes around and the fleas come back!

p.s. My sister totally wants to call him Bunny. So honestly, Mr. Bun Buns isn't too far off! :)

  21. Rabbits are so adorable! I didn't think I'd ever like them (I'm a huge dog person) but I am falling more and more in love with him. And an Easter bunny? How fun!

  22. Cute is right! Cute and so much fun! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I know, right? If I hadn't looked out the window the moment I did, I likely wouldn't have seen him (especially because he is so dark in color). So it was a crazy finding, but I'm glad we found him! :)

  24. Doesn't it seem like a dream? The more I think about it, the more I realize that if I hadn't been standing there by the window, I never would have spotted him and he'd likely still be hopping around outside.

And we haven't had rabbits before! We know people who do/did, but we've never had one ourselves. We do have experience with other rodents, though. But we're definitely learning lots about rabbits!

We really want to name him something original and charming and classic. My sister and I love "old" names (like Henry or Felix) but we also kind of want to name him something fun or quirky. It's a lot harder than we thought! Once we come up with a name, I'll have to think of something bloggy to do with him! :)

And we are really guessing he's domestic. He looks very much like a black Polish rabbit and he is also very calm and interested in people and being held. He was also really familiar with litterboxes, eating pellet rabbit food, and other things like that. So I guess we don't know for sure, we just assume. That, and he wasn't found in an area that would really let rabbits survive in the wild and he also doesn't look like the wild rabbits we have around here! :)

  25. Me, too! It's weird that we love the rabbit so much already--we're all kind of hoping that nothing happens to him now! And those are two super cute names. I'll add them to our name suggestion pool! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. What name did you choose for yours? We stilllll haven't chosen a name, and it's only going to get harder, haha. :)

And I really had no idea rabbits were/could be so cute! I will always be a dog person, but rabbits really are sweet animals and this one is one of the sweetest ones I've personally met yet!

  27. Ah a little bun bun! too cute!!! We fostered a bunny when I was in middle school - it wasn't for long, a month maybe, but it was the sweetest little thing! I hope you keep this cute little fluff!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cute, indeed! At this point, I think he's pretty much ours. :) We've got a bigger bunny cage now, plus lots of bunny accessories (all thanks to my sister who's "adopted" him!). :)

  29. Mine was all white and I got her around Easter time, so I named her Lily. haha

The rabbit from the Frosty cartoon was named Hocus! I thought that was a cute name, but he was all white too and a bunny used for magic tricks. ha. I'm definitely a dog person too! Love them!
